Here is an incomplete list of items to pack for the Practivistas Dominicana Program.

  1. reusable water bottle
  2. travel umbrella, light
  3. swimsuit
  4. beach towel
  5. Work gloves
  6. Work clothes
  7. lightweight raincoat
  8. Waterproof shoes
  9. antibacterial tissues
  10. sunscreen
  11. cotton socks
  12. comfortable clothes for heat
  13. very comfortable walking shoes
  14. formal summer outfit (for formal occasions)
  15. sunglasses
  16. hat for the sun
  17. backpack
  18. moneybelt (optional - serves to bring some money and save things for personal use)
  19. sandals (optional)
  20. pocket money ($300 USD) [ATM card is safer]
  21. a small gift for your family (e.g. something from Humboldt)
  22. a dictionary (English / Spanish etc.)
  23. pens, pencil, eraser, notebook
  24. a calculator
  25. a shirt that read: "Cal Poly Humboldt" (optional)
  26. Memory Stick for use with computer.
  27. Any small equipment you would like to use/donate (e.g. hammer, multimeter, screwdriver, etc.)
  28. Head lamp or flashlight
  29. Container to store food for lunch in.

Optional: At Your Own Risk[edit | edit source]

  1. Camera
  2. Laptop Computer (This will help a lot with assignments. The school facilities have wifi, but no computers. Alternatively you can use cybercafes.)
  3. Music player
  4. Musical instruments

Additional notes[edit | edit source]

  1. In Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic there are well stocked drug stores, but it is recommended to bring creams, sunscreen (very expensive in Santo Domingo), and deodorant of your choice.
  2. Many of items listed above can be found in Santo Domingo (and finding them there can be a fun way to get to know the city).

The exchange rate as of September 23rd, 2014 is about 43.6 Dominican Pesos (DOP) per dollar (USD). See http://www.google.com/search?q=USD+in+DOP for more current information.
