Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease. Rather than protect the body from foreign bodies (bacteria, virus', etc.) the immune system of lupus patients attacks the body's own healthy tissue resulting in rashes, lesions, joint pain, hair loss and even damage to internal organs.
