Interdependence
From Appropedia
Interdependence is in contrast to self-sufficiency. It recognizes that specialization and cooperation give many benefits.
While local food gives resilience, so does trade in food, through the efficiencies of trade (comparative advantage) and the ability to compensate for short or medium term variation in growing conditions.
Cities are places of interdependence - rural environments are the typical settings for proposed self-sufficient utopias but are not practical for current population levels. Cities with medium to high population density make transport more efficient and facilitate interaction, and enable people to more easily meet and collaborate.
