There are many ways to made deodorants from basic items found around the house. Their efficacy will vary, and it's best to experiment to find out what works best for you.

Alcohol-based deodorant[edit | edit source]

This deodorant is a good base one to which you can add non-toxic, safe scents if you'd like.

The deodorant requires 3 tablespoons of vodka and 3 tablespoons of witch hazel. This will work as it is but if you'd like a scent, you can add 10 to 40 drops of a safe essential oil.

Note: To determine the oil's safety, read the label or do an online search for its properties. Some oils cause allergies in some people and some oils, such as citrus-based oils, can cause photosensitivity when the skin covered in the oil is exposed to the light.

Baking soda deodorant[edit | edit source]

For this deodorant, you'll need 8 tablespoons of coconut oil (melted), 1/4 cup of baking soda, 1/4 cup of arrowroot powder and a safe essential oil.[1]

Mix together the arrowroot powder and baking soda in a small bowl. Gradually stir in the coconut oil and keep stirring until it becomes thicker. You can add more arrowroot powder if needed. Transfer to a small container, such as a little glass pot with a lid (ensure the container is thoroughly clean before using it). To use, smear on with your fingertips. This will last for up to 3 months if kept in a cool place.

Cider vinegar[edit | edit source]

Apple cider vinegar can be applied as a basic deodorant. To apply, sprinkle a few drops onto a flannel facecloth or similar clean cloth, and gently rub under your arms. Allow to dry (it will be quick drying), then you're all set. This should help to curb sweating.
