File:Chopper motorcycle dicycle.JPG
[edit] Summary
Schematic showing a amphibious, armoured dicycle, based on the EDWARD/hailfire droid and conventional paddle wheel boats. The platform is used to keep the driver level (not spinning around with the wheel). The platform is mounted on hard plastic rollers, see the fourth image at http://www.dezeen.com/2008/04/21/monowheel-by-ben-wilson/
Note that the paddles sit on the outside, on the rim (above the tyres). They hence do not make contact with the ground when driving. The vehicle is intented ie to provide wireless internet access to a (waterlogged) region (ie insecure regions as Rio de Janeiro). At the top is a round cylinder with blinds, allowing 360° view. The doors are made inside the wheels.
Note that that each tyre is driven by its own engine (hence also allowing turning). The engine uses a sprocket that rotates unto the rim; the rim is thus jagged on the inner side, to allow the gears to hook into the rim. The platform wheels grab on on the sides of the rim, which is thus smooth (yet conical, see image).
For the propulsion: the two engines used to propell the drive gear are Stirling engines. Both run on a gas burner; ie preferably running on a emissionless gas). See also: http://www.greenoptimistic.com/2009/07/01/dean-kamen-stirling-engine-scooter/ The Stirling engine is of the alpha-type, and probably best set up in a V-type configuration. It would be best that the engines would produce a thumping noice (as the pistons move up/down), mimicing the distinctive "thumping" sound of chopper motorcycles.
For the suspension: the suspension is provided by 4 springs mounted on the inner frame. A plate is put above the springs (not shown) unto which the driver + passengers sit.
