Treatment of greywater is important as untreated greywater is a public health and environmental hazard - although much less so than untreated sewage.

In municipal sewage treatment it generally mixed with blackwater (from toilets) and treated at a large sewage treatment plant (STP) before being discharged to a natural water body.

In alternative systems (such as ecological sanitation?) it is treated as a water and nutrient resource, and treated separately from sewage, often in a constructed wetland. This may be done at the scale of a household or small community, if sufficient space is available. If there is insufficient space for a constructed wetland, other methods of treatment may still be possible, including sedimentation and roughing filters.
