[edit] Background
Appropedia, a living resource wiki, provides infrastructure for collaboration and “sharing knowledge to build rich, sustainable lives (Appropedia).” Appropedia was founded in 2006 through efforts between innovators from the United States and Australia and has been developing as a global collaboration for social and environmental sustainability and appropriate technology.
[edit] Problem statement
The objective of this project is to help in the development of and marketing/networking for Appropedia.
[edit] Literature Review
This is a review of the available literature pertinent to networking and promoting a wiki.
[edit] Promoting wikis
- Wiki’s are viral by nature; so one good experience can grow exponentially.
- Wiki Champions, or key leaders, can help catalyze “wikimania.”
- Wiki Champions should avoid proprietary bottleneck effects.
- Invitation is an effective way to expand a network.
- Incorporate wiki use into someone’s job/class/project/etc.
- “Seed your wiki with content; since modifying initial content can be more easily done by early adopters of a wiki than facing a blank page, and also a better way to learn how to edit (like when editing in a sandbox).”[1]
- Maintain a strong community portal.
- “Some document repositories can (or should) be wiki-fied. Conversion of those documents would provide both a source of content and contributors who have a stake in the wiki.” [1]
- “The magnet pattern involves having some content exclusively on the wiki to draw users to it. Putting this content on the wiki and removing it from any other place (for example on an intranet or internal bulletin board) gets users used to looking at information on the wiki
- Addition of some seemingly fun/trivial content into your wiki lends to a non-threatening feel so as to encourage new users to use the wiki.
- Integrate a scaffold pattern into the wiki-- “giving people a place to start by "framing" the content that should eventually go on a page. People often respond better to a page with a template than one that's completely empty
- Time-sensitive content in a wiki can encourage wiki use in order to find the most up-to-date content.
- Social/Cultural relevance is important to “wikimania.”
