Cristina Méndez, 33, and her husband Vicente Gómez, 46, show radishes planted at their diversified farm in Planes Rio Grande, Intibucá, Intibucá, Honduras. Cristina Méndez, 33, participate in ASA EMPRENDE project that promotes micro finance good practices through GAAP groups (Selfsaving and loans) and Water Smart Agriculture practices (ASA) that promote soil and productive water conservation. In this parcel the family plants corn, beans, potatoes, radish, coriander leaves, and have fruit trees and logging trees they use as live barriers. “With the money we save in the GAAP group we can later invest in buying seeds, like the radish we are planting, or buying a pig to fatten and selling it at a higher price. They tell us is better to invest the money we save so we can generate earnings. What I do is buy radishes to plant, then I sell it with earnings, this allows the possibility to keep planting , investing and saving. We are planting them with the techniques they have taught us. A technician came and talked about how to manage our land depending on the terrain. The necessity of using live and dead barriers so that rainwater doesn’t take it away. They told us it is necessary to throwthe stubble that serves as a fertilizer to the soil. It is good to take care of our soil, because if one fertilizes in the wrong way, the rain takes away the fertilizer. Everything is carried down because of the slopes we have. But if we use stubble, the soil isn’t washed away. If we take care ofthe earth our children when they grow will have a healthy land so that they work to get good harvests because if one does not take care of the soil the harvests will be bad. The things we learn in the Agricultural Field Schools we put in practice in our lands”, says Cristina.
